The first thing to get your mind around is that persistence pays. I personally recommend going for every grant that you might qualify for – after all, when you use a shotgun full of pellets, at least one will strike the bull. That said, it is not that simple to get awarded an educational grant from the government. Does this thought scare you? If so, then perhaps your need is not great enough? If it does not alarm you, and you are prepared to persist and do things properly, then you are already halfway back to home.

Federal Grants
Federal Grants are great because they do not hassle exactly how you spend the money as long as it is related to your education, and you never have to pay the money back or work it off. The thing to watch for carefully is what the government calls the expected family contribution or in other words, how much your immediate family could pay towards your education. The government has a few tricks up its sleeve here, so be careful before you pretend to live in an apartment in a fancy part of town – the assessor will quickly figure out that there must be money floating round. The rule here is to be honest without over-stating things, and not to waste time if you have access to other funding.
Educational Opportunity Grants
Most schools and colleges have limited funds available for special cases, for example where an existing student, or their family meets an unexpected financial crisis. If something like that has happened to you, then you should definitely pay a visit to the administrative office and see whether they could help. If you do not ask, the chances are that they will never know your need.
Awarding Grants
Some schools prefer to hand grant money over to the parents or guardians of a student, particularly when the child is young, or could abuse the money. These are more often contributions towards general family expenses, as opposed to being strictly for educational purposes.
Other Forms of Subsidy
Other educational subsides offered by colleges and schools to their students include sibling discounts and merit awards. The former are lower fees to families with several children at the same school; the later are free scholarships to exceptional students from impoverished backgrounds.
It is a fact of life that people involved in education prefer students with good grades. This is partly because they desire this, and partly because they would prefer to spend money on a student who studies hard. If you flunked your year then you need to have a good excuse for this – otherwise it might be time to get a job.
Finally, remember this: nothing is for nothing and only rotten fruit falls from the tree. If you want a grant then you need to do something about it. This includes believing in yourself, and putting in your application. Why don’t you do that now?
