Many individuals are affected by today’s economic environment, many are in need of a bit of extra help, but most don’t know about the vast amounts of financial aid and government grants available to help individuals and families in their time of need. Perhaps an individual or family seeking a home is a low-income candidate or first-time home buyer, or maybe due to a bad credit history it is difficult to attain a mortgage. Many people in these situations do not know that there are billions of dollars in housing grants being offered by the government and special group organizations to renters and home buyers. The qualified candidate seeking a bit of financial help paying rent or qualifying for the down payment of a mortgage can receive government grant funds to pay rent or make a down payment on a home or even to make home renovations. In 2009, over $12 Billion was given away to low income Americans in federal grant money housing programs alone.

Little known to most, government grants are even available for home renovations. Home renovations or remodeling can also be subsidized by a government housing grant. Right now, the government has made available an unlimited amount of funds for housing grants devoted to cooling and heating repairs in many homes. The government feels that it is important to have at least the basic accessibility to heat in the winter or cool air in the dead of summer. Many individuals without these basic necessities are qualified for a tax free housing grant which will provide needy individuals with the financial aid to replace a furnace with a more energy efficient and dependable unit.

Moreover, you may find that your home is qualified for a block grant. This type of housing grant is available for low-cost energy related home repairs including weatherization. Block grants are large sums of aid made available by the federal government for housing repair and have very few restrictions or provisions. Homes that are in dire need of re-shingling in order to be more capable to withstand frequent tornados or strong winds depending on where your home is located. Now anyone qualified for a housing grant can use government funds to pay for essential weatherization renovations necessary to protect your home and family from the dangers of seasons.

Not everyone will qualify for housing grants, but until you apply you will not be aware of the money that may be available to you. As the real estate market continues to steadily fall housing has been becoming more affordable and more available. With the help of government housing grants a homebuyer can now find an affordable low interest home loan.

Housing Grants

One of the major expenses when you go off to college is the cost of housing near your campus. While many students take this factor into account when they are estimating their total costs of college, others do not fully realize how expensive housing can become. Whether you live on campus in a dorm or apartment, or live off campus in a house or apartment with roommates, your housing costs can become substantial.

Most of the grants awarded to students are intended for the expressed purposes of paying for you costs of attending college. This means you costs for all expenses associated with college-from tuition, to books, to housing costs and room and board. When you are applying for financial aid, your university should include an estimated cost of room and board for each year and give you that information. However, if you find a way to pay less for housing; such as finding several roommates who are willing to share a relatively inexpensive apartment; you may be able to save on your actual housing expenses.

There are several public and private sources of funding that you may be able to use when you are looking for housing grants. The federal government has a Pell Grant program for students and families that demonstrate substantial financial need, as shown by the Federal Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). There are also grants awarded by private foundations, or through individual universities, that are based on either financial need, academic merit, or a combination of both. The key to receiving any of these funds is to fully complete all financial aid paperwork, especially your FAFSA, as quickly and completely as possible.

College students should use their resources as efficiently as possible while they are pursuing their degrees. If you have received grant money for your college expenses, use this opportunity to work on your budgeting and money management skills. Since you have a finite amount of financial aid awarded, and you cannot control your tuition expenses, one of the best ways to save money is to be careful with your housing expenses. If you are able to live off campus in less expensive housing, and you can find roommates to help you split utility costs and rent, it is a very wise decision to do so. By reducing your housing costs, you can use most of your grant money to pay for you other college costs.
